Ontario Lake Trout Fishing

Back in the 60's and 70's, Lake Trout populations in Lake Huron were decimated from commercial fishing and introduction of the Sea Lamprey. The Lake Trout have rebounded through the controlled eradication of the Sea Lamprey by successful poisoning young Lamprey in their river spawning grounds just before they hatch.

This conservation effort has resulted in a good healthy Lake Trout population, which our guests enjoy today. Lake Trout can reach great sizes with 30-pounders being caught and released throughout the year. Most Lake Trout average in the 2 to 15 pound range. The 2 to 4-pounders are the best for eating. Any bigger Lake Trout should be let go, as they are the breeders.

Splake, which is a cross between a Lake Trout and a Brook Trout, are available but not as common as Lake Trout.
